January 30, 2012

Hey, what's that sound.....

Back last Fall, we wondered what the year of 2012 would be like musically.  We reflected back on the earliest days of our concert series, 14 years ago.  Four teen years ago!  We started "Highlands of Ohio, Folk and Celtic Music Society" because of our interest in Celtic music, and that it rarely made an appearance in this part of the state.   Our very first concert was with a local group of musicians who played Celtic songs and the focus of our first few years was almost entirely Celtic.

Eventually we got around to dabbling in the other part of our music series' name, the "folk" part, and since then we have presented all kinds of folk and Celtic music from many parts of the world.

Anyway, back to our thinking about 2012 last Fall.  We knew Beppe Gambetta would be coming in early February, and Jim Malcolm would be back again in late summer.  But we wondered if we would have a very limited schedule for most of the year.  Suddenly we were contacted by the agent for Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas wanting us to book them again.  Wow!  Yes we did want to, even though it would necessitate having them perform the evening after Beppe.

Early this year a band from Minneapolis inquired for a date.  They perform Nordic folk music (Scandanavia) and Melanie and I have often wanted to bring this music to the area.  Now was our chance and we will have Kaivama visit us on Tuesday, March 6th.

With Sogbety Diomande having his West African Festival to take place

Friday, May 11th to Sunday the 13th at Templed Hills Camp & Conference Center in Bellville, OH......

we do not plan any events for April or June.  BUT....on Thursday, July 12th, we will present Occidental Gypsy from Massachusetts who will bring their "melange" of gypsy music to us.

Jim Malcolm returns to entertain us Wednesday, August 29th with his blend of Scottish music, stories, tales and humour.

Discussions are underway to host multi-instrumented, multi-talented and multi-cultural music featuring the sitar and other intresting devices in early November.  Details will appear on this site when finalized.

So, Italian folk, Scottish fiddle and cello, Nordic folk, West African drumming and dance, Gypsy folk, Scottish guitar, vocals and more, and Indian (India) folk, all coming in 2012, at reasonable prices no less.  Sort of amazing don't ya think?
